Learn about the visible monuments, manuscripts, and fine art that demonstrate a rich African heritage and the traditional belief systems underpinning this heritage. From this historical evidence, you will further explore the histories of gold-rich civilisations in West Africa before the onset of slavery; covering empires from Ancient Ghana to Yoruba Kingdoms and Benin, to the Ashanti Empire and the Slave trade.
This course further provides students with greater insights into the many ways African Spiritual philosophies shaped traditions in these societies, in particular: African concepts of the Creator, spiritual interpretations of the forces of nature, and the important function of ancestral veneration in ancient and medieval African societies.
