MANAGING DIRECTOR

Black Cultural Archives (BCA) is the only national repository of Black history and culture in the UK. Established in 1981 and situated in its iconic building in Brixton’s Windrush Square since 2014, BCA collects, preserves and celebrates the presence of African and Caribbean heritage people in Britain.

  • Position: Managing Director 

  • Location: National / London 

  • Job Type: Full Time, Permanent 

  • Salary: Circa £50,000 per annum 

About the role: 

The Managing Director will be responsible to the Board and will lead on the strategic development and fiscal management of the organisation, developing and delivering against a Business Plan and fundraising strategy for the long-term sustainability of Black Cultural Archives. 

The Managing Director will be accountable for ensuring the organisation has the resources and financial capability to fulfil its ambitions. The successful individual will work with the Board to ensure effective operational management of BCA to achieve its aims and objectives. The successful candidate will initiate, develop and sustain collaborative relationships that enhances the profile of Black Cultural Archives.

About you: 

We are looking for a committed, articulate, strategic executive, with an affinity to BCA and its mission. The successful individual will have experience of best practice in organisational management, having worked with and reported to a Board or Executive Committee.

The successful individual will be comfortable initiating, managing and sustaining highly effective commercial partnerships with a diverse range of organisations and individuals. The Managing Director will have demonstrable leadership qualities, understand the process of creating and delivering policy and processes, whilst delivering an organisational transformation.

A key element of success will be the Managing Director’s ability to interface successfully with the heritage and culture communities to develop collaborative projects and programmes, motivating and inspiring the staff who deliver them.

ARCHIVIST

Black Cultural Archives is the UK’s only national repository of Black history and culture.  Our mission is to identify, catalogue, preserve and promote the heritage of people of African and Caribbean descent in this country. We require an Archivist to manage the collections service in a manner consistent with our mission.

 

We are seeking an Archivist as part of the Management Team. The role includes developing the strategic vision for collections and improving awareness and accessibility of our archive.

 

You will help to provide the full range of archive and records management services to researchers, the general public and to members of staff. You will assist in the care and management of the archives, liaising with donors and potential donors, as well as handling enquiries and participating in the work of the wider organisation. A key part of your role will include carrying-out research and scoping of our collections to inform our exhibitions and public programmes.

 

You will have a recognised qualification in archives with proven experience of working in an archive and have experience of records management and cataloguing to ISAD(G) standard. Ideally, you will have a passion for research.

 

You should be flexible, proactive and have excellent organisational and interpersonal skills and be able to demonstrate a sound problem solving approach to your work.

LEARNING OFFICER

Black Cultural Archives is seeking a highly motivated and experienced professional, with a proven track record of developing and delivering school workshops to both primary and secondary schools and to take forward a dynamic youth and adult learning engagement programme. 

You will work closely with the Director Exhibitions & Public Engagement, Archivist and internal and external stakeholders to promote Black Cultural Archives’ learning initiatives, collections and our archive projects.

You will be responsible for contributing to the planning, developing, delivering, marketing and evaluating of learning workshops and events, focusing on schools and young people. This includes delivery of family events and Youth Forum events.

You will be adept at balancing planning with event delivery. You will work with volunteers  and freelancers to create and deliver learning resources and activities that are linked to the national curriculum. You will deliver projects for after school and holiday clubs.

Salary                                      £25,000
