Ask BCA About: Legacy through Architecture

Architects Stephanie Edwards and Julian McIntosh

Ask BCA About is a monthly one-hour education and learning series hosted by subject matter experts. The sessions provide accessible insights and practical guidance on a range of topics exclusive to the Black Cultural Archives community.

Join us for an evening of reflection and conversation at Black Cultural Archives, featuring architects Stephanie Edwards and Julian McIntosh. Together, they’ll explore the future of Black spaces, not just what they look like, but who gets to shape them. The discussion will also honour the enduring legacy of Stephen Lawrence, whose dreams of becoming an architect inspired the Stephen Lawrence Scholarship.

This is an in-person event at Black Cultural Archives

This session is free for BCA Black Card members, however, your RSVP is essential. Please email marketing@bcaheritage.org.uk to reserve your space.

Stephanie Edwards is an architect, urbanist and the cofounder of Urban Symbiotics, an insight and research-led multidisciplinary design practice based in London that focuses on the user experience to innovate architecture, masterplanning and the public realm.

She focuses on delivering social value through a variety of project types and scales to facilitate the building of inclusive, equitable and progressive communities.

Stephanie graduated from the Architectural Association in 2010 and worked at OMA before establishing Urban Symbiotics in 2018 with product designer James Stewart. She is currently a Board member for Architecture Lobby, an advisory group member for the UK Built Environment Advisory Group (UKBEAG) and was previously an elected Council member of the RIBA. Stephanie was celebrated as a 'force for change' alongside Baroness Lawrence in Vogue's seminal September 2019 issue, and for ‘building mindful cities’ by The Financial Times in a profile (Sept 2020).

Julian McIntosh is the founder of JMA Architects, a practice recognised for its thoughtful and contemporary approach to designing spaces for living and culture.

He has been featured on the BBC and Netflix’s Your Home Made Perfect, where his innovative design approach reached a wide audience.

In addition to his residential work, Julian is deeply committed to exploring architecture’s role in shaping cultural identity and preserving heritage.

He serves as a trustee of the Brooking Museum, which houses the largest collection of British architectural detail in the world, and is an advisor to the Power of Pop Fund—a £4.45 million pooled fund supporting organisations that use pop culture and creativity to advance justice in the UK.
