Join us for a BCA Author Talk with Dr. Jarvis Givens & Dr. Derron Wallace as they explore the history of Black education in the UK and US.
At this first BCA Author Talks event, we bring to you two leading voices on the history of Black education in the UK and US where the struggles and achievements of Black teachers and students will be explored and how this legacy can inform and inspire strategy and policy for Black education in UK schools today.
TALK
Award-winning author and Professor of Education and African American Studies at Harvard University, Dr Jarvis Givens will discuss his recent books about the history of Black education in the United States and dive into his work which cover the traditions used to transcend racial domination in schools from slavery to Jim Crow.
IN CONVERSATION + Q&A
He will then be joined in conversation with Dr. Derron Wallace, Professor of Sociology and Education at Brandeis University to discuss the implications this work has for thinking about education in the African Diaspora particularly the UK. Dr. Wallace specialises in comparative studies of structural and cultural inequalities that affect young people of African descent in the UK and the US.
The discussion will be followed by a Q&A session.

Dr. Givens will sign copies of his two books, Fugitive Pedagogy and School Clothes and Dr. Wallace will also sign copies of his book, The Culture Trap.
ABOUT THE AUTHORS
Dr. Jarvis Givens is an Associate professor at Harvard and writes about race and education. His 2021 book on Black education in America, Fugitive Pedagogy, won several awards including the AERA Outstanding Book Award and the Frederic W. Ness Book Award from The American Association of Colleges and Universities. Jarvis is a top scholar in his field in the US
Dr. Derron Wallace is an assistant professor of sociology and education at Brandeis University, USA, and a research fellow at the University of Manchester, England. A sociologist of race, ethnicity and education, Derron's research focuses on structural and cultural inequalities in urban schools and neighbourhoods as experienced by Black youth. Through research, teaching and service, he explores the dynamics of, and the solutions to, racial, ethnic, gender and class inequalities in education.
