Overview of Black British History and BCA
90 minutes
Is this your first time visiting the Black Cultural Archives? Want a general overview of Black British history and the significance of BCA?
Book onto this workshop for an overview of our collections, and how they represent the presence of African and Caribbean communities in Britain from the Roman period to the present day. Attendees of this workshop will also be given an insight into why the BCA was founded in 1981, and the continued importance of our mission.
The workshop concludes with an opportunity to look through a range of archival documents from our 20th century collections.

Windrush and the Black Cultural Archives

Already visited the Black Cultural Archives? Want to enrich your understanding of a specific period of Black British history?
Unique oral histories of the Windrush generation are stored within the Black Cultural Archives. This workshop gives attendees the opportunity to hear from figures like Connie Mark and Ivor Fairweather, and learn about how their expectations of migrating from the Caribbean to Britain compared to the realities of this journey.
This workshop also explores how one member of the Windrush generation, Len Garrison, went on to co-found the Black Cultural Archives. Attendees will learn more about Garrison’s mission and its continued relevance today.

Uprisings
90 minutes
Already visited the Black Cultural Archives? Want to enrich your understanding of a specific period of Black British history?
Participants will develop knowledge of a significant local and national event, and its effect upon racial equality and social justice. They will engage with oral and written sources from influential change-makers around the time of the uprisings of 1981 and 1984, in particular the Brixton Defence Campaign which formed in opposition to the government appointed Scarman Enquiry.
Through this workshop, attendees will build a deeper understanding of the historical context in which the Black Cultural Archives were founded. They will also consider the continued impact of the 1981 Uprisings, as well as the continued importance of the Black Cultural Archives.

History of Black British Feminism

Already visited the Black Cultural Archives? Want to enrich your understanding of a specific period of Black British history?
This workshop recognises and celebrates the campaigns of Black women for equality and justice. Against the backdrop of the Black Power and Women’s Liberation Movements, the Organisation of Women of Asian and African Descent (OWAAD) was born in 1978, to give a voice to society’s marginalised.
Participants will explore the different campaigns through listening to interviews and looking at material donated by the women themselves. The workshop activities encourage attendees to reflect on contemporary inequalities, confidently express their feelings, and think about how they can contribute to change.

On receipt of an invoice from Black Cultural Archives, please ensure payment is completed before the date of your trip. There is a 50% cancellation fee if you cancel two weeks prior to the date of your visit.
