MALIK MAHEUX
Head of Business Solutions, Reinsurance
Empowering Through Authenticity
For Malik Maheux, leadership starts with authenticity and empathy. Born and raised in Montreal, he trained as an actuary before his career took him from Canada to New York and now to Bermuda, where he serves as Head of Business Solutions at Legal & General Reinsurance. In this role, he focuses on growing L&G’s reinsurance presence in international markets.
Like many Black professionals, Malik’s career has often meant being one of the few. From his earliest roles in Montreal to meetings in New York, he was often the only Black individual at the table. Without the same shared references or experiences, building connections and relationships does require more effort. But rather than seeing this as a barrier, Malik viewed those moments as opportunities to broaden his perspective and find common ground — an essential skill in today’s global and diverse environment.
Over time, Malik realised that authenticity was one of his greatest strengths. Stay true to yourself. Trust your instincts. Focus on adding value. It’s advice he often shares with younger colleagues, especially those navigating spaces where representation is limited.
Although representation is still lagging in the field, Malik has found Legal & General to be a place where colleagues actively foster openness, respect, and collaboration, often going out of their way to make people from all backgrounds feel included.
Moving to New York marked a major turning point in Malik’s career, opening the door to new opportunities on a global stage and ultimately setting the course for his international journey to Bermuda. Becoming a father has since broadened his perspective. “I want my son to grow up seeing a world full of opportunities and a path shaped by dedication and authenticity — something I hope to reflect in my own journey,” he says.
Reflecting on Standing Firm in Power and Pride, Malik speaks with quiet conviction: “It’s about believing in your ability, committing, and moving forward. You don’t have to change who you are to succeed. If you stay authentic, work well with others, and focus on adding value, it will be recognised. And if it isn’t, you may not be in the right organisation to reach your full potential.”
“I really understood the value of representation when I saw that the CEO of the reinsurance business in Bermuda at the time was a Black man — it left a lasting impression,” Malik recalls. “I’d never seen a Black executive at that level. It made me think, ‘This is a place where I can continue to grow and where opportunities exist.” Now, in his own senior role, Malik hopes his presence helps empower the next generation: For many, seeing someone who looks like them in a senior role can make the path ahead feel more real.
Ultimately, Malik hopes his legacy will be one of visibility and impact: “If someone sees my journey and thinks, I can do this too, then I’ve done my part.”
