New Windrush Exhibition to Headline Big Caribbean Lunch in Brixton

A Celebration of Culture, Legacy, and Community

Sunday 22 June 2025 | 12–7pm | Windrush Square, Brixton

Hosted by Friends of Windrush Square

An impressive new outdoor exhibition featuring the moving stories of Windrush pioneers will be revealed as Brixton’s Windrush Square comes alive this summer with the sights, sounds, and flavours of the Caribbean. The Annual Big Caribbean Lunch returns on Sunday 22 June 2025 to mark official Windrush Day.

This vibrant, family-friendly landmark event is a joyful celebration of Caribbean culture, honouring the Windrush legacy through food, music, storytelling, art, and community spirit. From 12 noon to 7pm, the square will transform into a lively, welcoming space featuring local food vendors, live performances, spoken word, and the new exhibition titled Windrush Untold Stories.

This powerful display will showcase 20 personal stories from members of the Windrush generation — featuring striking portraits and first-hand accounts from Caribbean elders who arrived in the UK between the late 1940s and 1970s. These deeply personal stories reflect the courage, challenges, and cultural impact of a generation whose legacy continues to shape British life.

As a gesture of appreciation and respect, a free Caribbean lunch will be offered to Windrush elders, served in a dedicated area where they can gather, connect, and be celebrated by the community.

“The Big Caribbean Lunch is more than just a lunch – it’s a moment to gather, honour, and celebrate the cultural contributions of Caribbean people in the UK,” said Ros Griffiths, Founder of The Big Caribbean Lunch. “We come together on official Windrush Day to honour the Windrush generation and their lasting impact. Their stories inspire us, their strength grounds us, and their culture unites us. It’s a day for remembrance, celebration, and connection in the heart of Brixton.”

Event Highlights:

  • Authentic Caribbean Street food

  • Live reggae, soca, and steel pan music

  • Spoken word and storytelling performances

  • Local artisan and cultural market stalls

  • Support available for those seeking help with the Government’s Windrush Compensation Scheme and immigration issues

Together, the partners bring expertise in storytelling, heritage, photography, community engagement, and event delivery.
