Wikimedia UK to Collaborate with Black Cultural Archives

Thanks to the Wikimedia Foundation’s Knowledge Equity Fund, we’re advancing how we share, protect, and celebrate Black British history. Black Cultural Archives has been chosen as one of six grantees for the final round.

For 44 years, Black Cultural Archives has stood as a vital custodian of Black British history, driven by passion, sustained through challenges, and uplifted by community. While we’ve achieved much, we are continually looking for ways to strengthen upon the foundation of our mission.  Thanks to the Wikimedia Foundation’s Knowledge Equity Fund grant, we’re taking big steps forward in how we share, protect, and celebrate our stories by:

  • Securing the teaching and learning of archival materials, with a focus on engaging younger generations

  • Expanding digital learning resources, including translated study guides, to make our archives more accessible

  • Implementing a more robust backup system to safeguard our collections for the future

Beyond these critical upgrades, Wikimedia UK will deepen the partnership by:

  • Providing their expertise and networks to amplify our work

  • Offering insights into best practices, similar to a consultancy capacity, to help refine our methods

  • Promoting Black Cultural Archives’ open-access resources while helping us develop a sustainable model to engage future generations

  • Assisting in guiding crucial conversations on ethics, digitisation, and licensing

WMUK’s skills and vision create a powerful knowledge-sharing opportunity, one that will help in navigating strategic challenges and unlock new possibilities in safeguarding Black British history.
