Dr Inez Brown announced as new Board Chair of Black Cultural Archives
Dr Inez Brown
Black Cultural Archives (BCA) is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Inez Brown as Chair of its Board of Trustees.
Dr Brown brings to BCA an exceptional record of civic leadership, business acumen, and tireless advocacy. She is currently Regional Chair of the central region, including East West Midlands of the Institute of Directors – a role she will complete in October 2025 – and served as the first Black president of the Birmingham Law Society in its 200-plus year existence. In the latter position, she established the Society’s first diversity inclusion scheme, providing scholarships and mentoring to students from disadvantaged backgrounds and under-represented groups.
Dr Brown steps into the role at a crucial moment for BCA. Her leadership will be essential in realising the charity’s long-term vision of achieving financial sustainability and growing its cultural and educational impact. She will work closely alongside BCA’s new Managing Director once that role, currently undergoing recruitment, is filled.
“It is a profound honour to take on the role of Chair of the Board of Trustees at the Black Cultural Archives — a vital institution that preserves and celebrates the richness of Black British history,” said Dr Brown. “I am deeply committed to building on the legacy of those who came before me, and to working with the Board, staff, and community to ensure BCA continues to inspire, educate, and empower future generations."
"The Board of Trustees warmly welcomes our new Chair and looks forward to this next chapter. Together, we remain dedicated to ensuring BCA thrives as a beacon of culture, education, and community,” said the BCA Board of Trustees.
The Board would also like to extend its sincere thanks to Sharmaine Lovegrove for her commitment and leadership as Interim Chair. While Sharmaine has now stepped down from the Board, she remains a valued supporter of BCA. We wish her every success in her future endeavours.
