THE BRIXTON UPRISINGS

The Brixton Uprisings – Upper Key Stage 3 Lessons Plans and Video 

This series of four lesson plans and five interviews focuses on the significance and resonance of the Brixton Uprisings in 1981 and 1985, and the subsequent uprisings related to them. 

Interviewed by Year 9 students from The Charter School North Dulwich and The Charter School East Dulwich, each interview features oral testimony from interviewees, who each hold a unique perspective on the Uprisings. 

The aim is to engage young people in the process of active historical research and to take the lead in uncovering local history. 

  • The Brixton Uprisings: An Interview with Leila Hassan Howe

    An interview with activist Leila Hassan Howe, reflecting on the 1981 Brixton Uprising and its importance today. In this interview, Leila discusses what her connection was to the Brixton Uprising and her thoughts on the history that led to it and its ongoing legacy.

    The interview was conducted by Year 9 students Babajide and Tyra from The Charter School North Dulwich on the 10th May 2022 at the Black Cultural Archives in Brixton.

  • The Brixton Uprisings: An Interview with George Rhoden

    An interview with former police officer George Rhoden, reflecting on the 1981 Brixton Uprising and its importance today. In this interview, George discusses how he overcame the many challenges he faced as a Black Police officer at the time of the Uprising and what it meant to him.

    The interview was conducted by Year 9 students Prince and Omarley from The Charter School East Dulwich on the 10th May 2022 at the Black Cultural Archives in Brixton.

  • The Brixton Uprisings: An Interview with Chris Elliott

    An interview with former journalist Chris Elliott, reflecting on the 1985 Brixton Uprising and its importance today. In this interview, Chris discusses being born in Brixton, his connection to the Uprising as a reporter for the Sunday Telegraph, and his perspective of the 1985 Uprising.

  • The Brixton Uprisings: An Interview with Michael Groce

    An interview with community worker and poet Michael Groce, reflecting on the 1985 Brixton Uprising and its legacy. In this interview, Michael discusses what it was like growing up in Brixton and his experience dealing with the shooting of his mother, Cherry Groce by a police officer, which sparked the 1985 Uprising.

  • The Brixton Uprisings: An Interview with Ros Griffiths

    An interview with community activist Ros Griffiths, reflecting on the 1981 Brixton Uprising and its legacy. In this interview, Ros discusses being a teenager living in Brixton at the time of the uprising, taking part in the Black People’s Day of Action. Today, Ros’ work is focused on developing Windrush Square in Brixton as a heritage site, with the aim of attracting visitors from across the country.
